Yet more on “spy” scandal

This is from a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia who has had personal experience w/ the recent “spy” scandal. On Cooper (the low-level embassy employee):

“I don’t think anyone took him seriously, because in the same talk herecommended we get clubs for our cars (our cars?) and advised us not to travel in micros (we had extensive training on how to do just that and were directly told by Peace Corps on several occasions to take micros).”

  1. I remember in my embassy meeting (as a Fulbright-Hays fellow) being told to avoid all public transportation except radio taxis and to not eat street food. As an undergraduate, I even had to sign a document for a grant saying I would not eat street food when my project was on street food!

Of course such advice is ridiculous and generally ignored. Nevertheless, I think the right thing was done by recalling this embassy official. If he is that out of touch with the policies of his Embassy and the State Department, then he should not have that job.
